Synergy - the bonus that is achieved when things work together harmoniously." Great American author Mark Twain certainly had it right. And, the effects of Twain's synergistic "bonus" can clearly be seen in the built environment. Buildings constructed from products that fit well together not only meet initial plans and specs, but also pay out an unanticipated bonus by exceeding the expectations of their owners and occupants. Twain's observation also reminds us that, as we strive for higher-performing roofing systems, we should ask ourselves how the pieces fit together to assure harmony and maximize performance. |

PIMA To Serve on High Performance Building Council
|
| PIMA has been invited to serve as a member of the High Performance Building Council. Authorized by Section 914 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the Council is to recommend consensus based national standards for high performance buildings. Working as part of the National Institute of Building Sciences, the Council will attempt to “bridge the divide” between design/construction and operations. |

President Bush signed into law the Energy Policy Act of 2005 on Aug. 8. The law incorporates key provisions for energy-efficient commercial and residential buildings. Specifically, the new legislation provides tax deductions for owners of commercial buildings that exceed ASHRAE 90.1, "Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings," as well as tax credits for highly energy-efficient residential construction. |

Low-Slope Reroofing Guidelines

A recent article in Professional Roofing on low-slope roofing guidelines informed the readers of the limits regarding direct-to-deck applications of polystyrene –“Building codes have placed restrictions on the use of polystyrene insulation—both expanded and extruded—that is installed directly on metal decks. NRCA does not recommend installation of any re-cover roof system over an existing roof system that incorporates polystyrene insulation applied directly to a metal roof deck." |
